Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism happens when someone portrays the work of another (data, text, or theories) as if it were his/her own without giving due credit. There are several levels of plagiarism. The severity is determined by the extent of the copied content, the originality of the copied material, the position/context/type of material, and the referencing/attribution of the material utilized. Because each situation is unique, choices will differ from one another.

  • Plagiarism examples include, but are not limited to:
  • Copying someone else’s work verbatim and submitting it as one’s own.
  • Significant parts of content are copied verbatim from a single source.
  • ‘Patchwork copying’ is the practice of combining verbatim copied content from several sources. This might be as little as one or two paragraphs or as much as many paragraphs.
  • Changing key words and phrases while maintaining the source’s fundamental material as a framework.
  • Rephrasing the original words and/or structure of the material and presenting it as one’s own.
  • Mixing slightly reworked content from many sources and presenting what has already been published as new.
  • The work is mentioned, however the sections that are quoted are not properly specified. This can be coupled with sections of the text that have been copied without citation.

Note: Please keep in mind that the preceding is not directly relevant to review papers. Review articles are designed to provide a synopsis of the current literature. Except for appropriately quoted and/or mentioned sources, authors should use their own words, and the work should incorporate a novel viewpoint.
